Hailing from Daegu, South Korea, her early life unfolded during a challenging period of Japanese rule, which sometimes leads to confusion about her birthplace being listed as Japan. She began her acting career in 1964, making her debut with a minor role in the film "Rice," directed by Shin Sang-ok. That same year, she was recognized for her talent and was accepted into Seoul Central Broadcasting, now known as KBS.
